The New York Yankees announced they will place Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list due to a left calf strain, manager Aaron Boone told reporters after Monday's 4-2 win.

This comes after the slugger left Friday's game with right calf tightness. Initially, the tightness was not thought to require a stint on the injured list, but two days later, the Yankees dropped the hammer.

An MRI was scheduled on Monday as Stanton missed his third straight game against the Texas Rangers. In his place, Jasson Dominguez filled the role of designated hitter.

What happened to Giancarlo Stanton?

While rounding up the bases in Friday's game, Giancarlo Stanton tweaked his calf. Right now, it doesn't appear to be a high-grade injury even after his placement on the injured list. It won't be long before the slugger returns.

Interestingly, Stanton, who has been injury-prone, got injured for the first time this season. The five-time All-Star is slashing .256/.302/.422 with three home runs in 96 plate appearances. The numbers are average, but we all know what Stanton can do when he gets hot.

Stanton's injury also allows the Yankees to give Dominguez some time amid an outfield surplus. The young slugger needs to make these opportunities count. Meanwhile, the Yankees are expected to announce a corresponding move to fill the roster, with bullpen pitching the need of the hour.
