New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. does not lack confidence, both in himself and the teams he suits up for.
Last September, Chisholm had this to say about the Yankees, who trailed the Toronto Blue Jays by three games in the AL East with two weeks remaining in the regular season:
"I feel like any team that thinks they're better than us, they should know that when we step on the field, that we're coming with relentlessness and we're coming to step on necks," Chisholm told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. "We're not here to play around. We're going to do the job and get the job done."
Chisholm and the Yankees did not get the job done. Not only did they fail to win the division, but the Blue Jays also eliminated them from the postseason in the ALDS.
Chisholm's WBC performance called an 'embarrassment'
Just a few weeks ago, the two-time All-Star predicted he would hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases this upcoming year. Chisholm brought a similar level of belief to the World Baseball Classic with one of the tournament's underdogs, Great Britain.
"We're planning on shocking the world," Chisholm said about Great Britain before the WBC began. In three losses, he's 2-for-11 with six strikeouts at the plate.
"Chisholm was the most outspoken Great Britain player prior to the World Baseball Classic, and thus far, he's been the most notorious failure of the WBC as a whole," FanSided's Mark Powell wrote Sunday. "Chisholm's lack of plate discipline is an issue, with the 28-year-old pressing at times and, quite clearly, trying to do too much."
Great Britain may have to requalify for the next WBC after its elimination from quarterfinal contention. Chisholm, the best player on the roster, has done more harm than good.
