The New York Yankees are heading into the regular season with Anthony Volpe injured and not expected to make the Opening Day roster. This has left the shortstop position wide open as Volpe works to recover as quickly as possible.

“Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Thursday that Volpe won't swing a bat for at least four months and will be unable to dive on his surgically repaired left shoulder for six months. Cashman added that the Yankees hope Volpe will be ready 'sometime in April; maybe, worst-case scenario, May.' The Yankees open the 2026 season in San Francisco against the Giants on March 25,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.

The Yankees did attempt to fill Volpe’s void, but the solution would likely have been unsettling. New York explored a trade for Corey Seager.

“Per Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the Yankees held trade discussions with the Texas Rangers about shortstop Corey Seager. New York's need at shortstop was clear as day for most of the winter, and adding a player like Seager would've answered those questions and then some. Anthony Volpe may be a former top prospect, but he is not Seager, who is still in his prime entering his age-32 season,” FanSided’s Mark Powell wrote.

WFAN’s Tommy Lagauer believes that Seager coming to New York would have been a perfect fit.

“To me, Seager would have been the perfect fit, and he’s a guy who’s been talked about and linked to the Yankees for quite some time because of the swing, because of the short porch, because of his ability and his skill set. Seager is just… and the Yankees feel like that match-made-in-heaven, perfect fit. But it did not go down,” Lagauer said.

The Texas Rangers ultimately took Seager off the trade block, but the Yankees could have made a deal they couldn’t resist. For now, the team will be without Seager, but if his name comes up again, New York will likely be the first to inquire.

Seager is nothing short of a winner, and the Yankees are eager to return to the World Series. Bringing in Seager could help the team understand what it takes to win, given his two World Series titles.
