Za'Darius Smith already looks like another master move by Howie Roseman

There's no such thing as the perfect general manager or executive. No one gets everything right. Mistakes happen. It was a mistake for the Philadelphia Eagles to draft Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson. To his credit, Howie Roseman has owned that. He has also made the proper amends.

If Reagor isn't selected, the Eagles probably wouldn't have acquired DeVonta Smith or A.J. Brown. Looking at things from that lens, Reagor's time here wasn't all bad. What's most important is that mistakes are learned from, and since we have turned the page, Roseman and his scouting staff have been on fire. One of the latest moves seems to be another jackpot signing already.

Za'Darius Smith shines in his Eagles debut.

After the Eagles signed Za'Darius Smith on the heels of a Week 1 win, most expected he'd get some burn by Week 2. Maybe he gets his feet wet and plays well. That's what most of us were thinking.

Boy, did he play well! How about four tackles, two solo and two combined? How about a tackle for loss, one sack, and an additional hit on Patrick Mahomes?

It's fair to reason that Smith is here because Philadelphia didn't or isn't getting everything they wanted from someone else. This feels like more than taking out another insurance policy. Schematically, the Eagles have a few guys with similar builds and skill sets. Smith isn't an 'outside linebacker'. He's a true defensive end.

He can rush. He can set the edge. Most importantly, he is excited to be with his new teammates. He was one of the first guys to take the field for early warmups and get his pads on. How about the early and immediate contribution?

Smith will get better in Fangio's defense. It's hard to find a reason for complaint, except to state the following. How come the Eagles didn't snatch this guy up earlier? Can you imagine where we'd be if he had more time to get acclimated? Oh well... Better late than never, right?

He's 33 years old. He wasn't in anyone's camp. Three practices were the extent of his workload this week. This is encouraging. Howie Roseman may have done it again.
