Are Giants Making A Mistake With Jaxson Dart Move?

When the New York Giants selected Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, they started the metaphorical clock on when the organization would turn the keys to him for good.

Russell Wilson was brought in to be the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. He brings over a decade of experience and a Super Bowl pedigree.

That Super Bowl title is a long way in the past, though. Wilson, now in his age-37 season, is on his third team in as many years, and has struggled at times to be the kind of Pro Bowl passer that put him on a Hall-of-Fame trajectory in Seattle.

Even still, the Giants did not hesitate to make the veteran their starting quarterback in 2025.

"These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter," Giants head coach Brian Daboll said after practice Wednesday. “He’s a guy who has done it for a long time. He has a lot of experience and he’s been in a number of systems -- he’s been great in the room thus far, has shown tremendous leadership, and we have a very good relationship.”

Despite New York's push to keep Wilson as their starter in 2025, are they making a mistake by sitting Dart early in his career?

The rookie signal-caller struggled in his limited reps during Wednesday's practice. He has all the intangibles to be great, but we understand why the team thinks it would be foolish to throw him into the deep end of the pool - and into the starting lineup - before he is ready.

If Wednesday's practice is an indication, it is clear that he is not, making New York's decision at starting quarterback an easier - if temporary - one.
