Authorities allegedly found 2.1 pounds of marijuana, other drug paraphernalia in Aden Holloway's apartment
Authorities reportedly found 2.1 pounds of marijuana in the apartment of Alabama star basketball player Aden Holloway, according to documents acquired by ESPN on Tuesday. Charging documents claim police found marijuana in multiple areas of Holloway’s residence, in addition to cash, a prescription sedative, a rolling tray and packaging materials during their search.
Holloway, 21, was arrested Monday following that search. He was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp. First-degree possession of marijuana is a Class C felony in Alabama, which could result in a maximum of 10 years in a state penitentiary and a $15,000 fine.
Charging documents acquired by ESPN paint a far more comprehensive picture of Holloway’s arrest, including a list of items found by authorities during their search.
Per the charging documents, the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force was executing a search warrant at Holloway's apartment when authorities found marijuana in a backpack, a jacket pocket, a suitcase, in a TV entertainment stand and a vacuum-sealed bag, along with cash, the prescription sedative promethazine, a "rolling tray" and packaging materials.
That was just in one room.
Authorities found additional marijuana in other parts of Holloway’s residence, per the charging documents.
The amount of marijuana allegedly found at Holloway’s apartment is significant, as any amount 2.2 pounds or higher is considered enough to warrant a drug-trafficking charge in Alabama.
Holloway could also face an additional charge for allegedly having promethazine — a sedative — in his apartment. Holloway reportedly does not have a prescription for the drug.
Authorities have not revealed why the search was initially performed.
In the charging documents, they claim Holloway may have possessed the marijuana for something “other than personal use,” per ESPN.
Per the charging documents, authorities believe Holloway was in possession of "marijuana for other than personal use" and "did possess, distribute, sell, transport, import, transfer or otherwise use a controlled substance, to wit: marijuana, on which a tax had not been imposed."
Holloway reportedly invoked his Miranda rights and remained silent during the search, though allegedly told authorities he “only smokes.”
Following news of Holloway’s arrest, Alabama removed Holloway from campus. Men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats said Holloway was suspended pending an investigation by the University of Alabama student-conduct office. Oats said he was disappointed in the development, but also wanted to “get [Holloway] the help that he needs, and we’re going to continue to help him whatever way we can.”
While Oats didn’t explicitly say Holloway would miss the NCAA tournament, he implied it, saying his message to the team Monday was that it can win games “with guys not available,” per ESPN.
Holloway was bonded out of Tuscaloosa County jail early Monday morning. His bond was set at $5,000.
Alabama — which earned a No. 4 seed — is set to play No. 13 Hofstra in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday. They’ll likely play that game without Holloway, the team’s second-leading scorer this season.
