Baseball: Chargers pull away to post 11-1 win against Morristown
A 5-run third inning by host North Decatur broke open a 1-1 game and sent the Chargers on to the 11-1 victory against MHC foe Morristown.
North scored on run in the bottom of the first. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the top of the third inning.
North put the game away with five runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning.
Matthew Fields got the win on the mound for North. Fields went all five innings, allowing no earned runs on one hit and five walks while striking out nine.
At the plate, the Chargers had 11 hits and nine RBIs. Tyler Dean had a single, triple, home run and four RBIs. Grayson Downey finished with a double, triple and two RBIs. Eli Trenkamp had a single, double and RBI. Kipton Ruf added a double and RBI. Fields also had a single.
South Decatur
The Cougars dropped a pair of games this week.
Wednesday, South Decatur was defeated by Knightstown 12-2.
South led 2-0 through three innings, but the Panthers scored nine runs in the fourth and three in the fifth inning to rally for the win.
Cayden Drake led South at the plate with a single and two RBIs. Grady Scudder and Drake Scaggs each had a single.
Corey Nugent took the loss for South on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings. Carter Tull pitched 2.0 innings.
Thursday, South Ripley edged the Cougars 6-5.
The Cougars jumped out to a 5-0 lead at South Ripley, but the Raiders rallied for six runs through the final three at-bats to pick up the win.
JP Scudder pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven. Drake pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no earned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out five.
Nugent hit a home run for South. JP Scudder and Drake both added a double. Grady Scudder had two singles. Scaggs and Tull both singled.
Greensburg
The Pirates split a pair of games this week. Greensburg fell 8-1 to Madison Tuesday.
Ethan Smith, Zayden Miller and Colt McCalvin all singled for the Pirates.
Thursday, the Pirates trailed conference foe Lawrenceburg 6-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. Greensburg fought all the way back to tie the game on a triple off the bat of Luke Hoeing. Hoeing scored the winning run (7-6 final) as Ayden Sefton reached on an error.
Greensburg’s Logan Meyer had a single and double. Ethan Bishop added a pair of singles. Smith and Chase Walsman both had a single.
Jacob Duerstock, Chance Richards and Walsman combined to pitch seven innings on the hill for the Pirates.
Rushville
The Lions dropped to 0-3 on the season with an 11-1 loss to Shenandoah and an 11-10 loss to EIAC foe South Dearborn.
In the game against Shenandoah, the Lions had four hits. Josh Campbell had a pair of singles. Joel Downey and Carter Woolf both added a single.
Against South Dearborn, the Lions rallied for a combined seven runs in the final two innings, but could not overcome the early Knights’ lead.
Woolf led the Rushville offense with four singles. Damion Trueblood added three singles and two RBIs. Casey Thompson had two singles, a double and three RBIs. Downey and Josh Cowan both had a double. Campbell had a single.
On the mound, Colton Logsdon pitched 4.2 innings. Campbell pitched 1.1 innings and Woolf pitched 1.0 inning.
Batesville
The Bulldogs doubled up Connersville 8-4 Thursday to improve to 4-1 on the season.
At the plate, Ronan Post tripled and drove in two runs. Carson Meyer had a double. Preston Blessing doubled and drove in two runs. Noah Weigel, Jackson Peetz, William Huber and Dane Dudley (2 RBIs) all singled. Brayden Maple drove in one run.
Meyer got the win on the mound, allowing one earned run through 5.0 innings on five hits while striking out eight. Maple pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out three.
