Bucs' Zyon McCollum playing with confidence since signing extension
When the Buccaneers signed cornerback Zyon McCollum to a contract extension this offseason, it raised a few eyebrows. The former fifth-round pick had shown promise in flashes, but many wondered if the Bucs were betting on potential more than proven production.
So far, that bet is looking smart.
Through the early part of the 2025 season, McCollum has responded to the extension with his most consistent and confident play as a pro. Starting opposite Jamel Dean, McCollum has tightened up his coverage technique, played more physical at the line, and flashed improved awareness in both man and zone schemes. His ability to stay in phase and limit big plays has made him a key part of Todd Bowles’ secondary.
More importantly, he looks comfortable. The mental errors that occasionally popped up earlier in his career have largely disappeared. He’s trusting his technique, playing fast, and showing the kind of growth the Bucs hoped for when they locked him up. He's had opportunities for interceptions, but just hasn't cashed in on them yet. McCollum is set to be the Bucs' long-term cornerback of the future.
He will likely be the Bucs' lone veteran presence next season, with Jamel Dean agreeing to a pay cut to remain on the team after the Bucs drafted two rookie corners in the 2025 NFL draft, and he's played like it thus far.
