Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh sounds off on RB Najee Harris' status for Week 1 vs. Chiefs

Head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke to the media on Friday, providing updates on a few things, including the plans at offensive tackle following the season-ending injury to Rashawn Slater.

One of the other things Harbaugh talked about was the status of running back Najee Harris, who has been sidelined with an eye injury sustained during a Fourth of July fireworks mishap.

When asked if Harris would be on the field for the season opener against the Chiefs, Harbaugh was noncommittal but suggested it was a possibility. 

"There's a chance he is," Harbaugh said.

Harris' injury was deemed "superficial" by his agent, Doug Hendrickson. However, Harbaugh has yet to reveal the nature of the injury.

"I don't comment because I'm not a doctor," Harbaugh said. "I'm not Mr. Harris' agent, either. I'm talking about what I know, and 'Can he open his eye?' 'Yeah.' I've looked into his eye. I can tell you stuff like that."

Harris has been at practice, limited to walking laps while wearing a helmet and weighted vest. Harbaugh said this is part of his recommended rehabilitation process.

Harris remains on the non-football injury (NFI) list. If he is not activated before final roster cuts later this month, Harris would be required to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
