Darius Slay rejects Buffalo Bills, will not report after pick up

It is frigid, windy, and snowy this time of year in Buffalo. While Christmas weather is good for some, for others, it's a place where they don't dare enter until spring.

Darius Slay is of the latter variety.

A day after the Bills picked up the former All-Pro cornerback off waivers, Slay has (possibly literally) cold feet and will not report to Buffalo. The report is that the experienced defensive back isn't sure he wants to continue playing and isn't expected to sign with the AFC East franchise.

The prevailing theory is that Slay, when dropped by the Pittsburgh Steelers, hoped his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, would pick him up for a final run towards the Super Bowl. Although it was reported that the Eagles put a claim in for Slay on the waiver wire, the Bills, due to a worse record, jumped Philadelphia and grabbed the 34-year-old before he could have a reunion with the Eagles.

Slay's resistance to report to the Bills puts the situation in a precarious predicament. While Buffalo cannot outright force Slay to play for the team, they can retain his rights and prevent him from playing for any other team if they choose to do so. The Eagles and Slay, who seem to have a common interest in a reunion, cannot come together unless the Bills officially release the cornerback, and no one signs him until the Eagles have the opportunity to select him in the waiver line order.
