Dolphins move veteran special teamer up to active roster

The Miami Dolphins moved linebacker Caleb Johnson to the active roster and replaced him on the practice squad with former Buffalo Bills linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo.

Johnson, 27, is a veteran special teamer who began his career with the Chicago Bears in 2021 and spent the next three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"He's exceeded expectations," then-Jaguars special teams coordinator Heath Farwell said of Johnson during the 2022 season. "We knew he was going to be a good player but he's been even better. He has great hands, good physicality, good instinct and a good feel to get to the ball. His ability to get off blocks, he has good length and he's just always around the football."

The Dolphins had an available place on the 53-man roster after moving safety and soon-to-be linebacker Jordan Colbert to the injured reserve last week.

Ciarlo, 24, spent his rookie season last year on the New York Jets' injured reserve after tearing his ACL in preseason. The Army grad then earned a place with the Buffalo Bills earlier this year after impressing in a tryout. Ciarlo was featured in a segment on HBO's Hard Knocks, which included some praise from head coach Sean McDermott for his performance in preseason.

Ciarlo appeared in one regular season game with the Bills and spent much of the year on Buffalo's practice squad, but was released by the team earlier this month.
