Ex-New York Giants RB Matt Breida retiring from NFL

After seven seasons, former New York Giants running back Matt Breida has decided to walk away from football.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that Breida intends to file his retirement paperwork after turning down a workout offer from the Miami Dolphins, whom he played for in 2020.

The 30-year-old Breida originally signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie out of Georgia Southern in 2017. He spent three seasons in the Bay Area before joining the Dolphins and then linking up with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll in Buffalo (2021).

After Schoen became the Giants' general manager and Daboll their head coach, Breida jumped ship and moved to East Rutherford for two seasons before closing out his career where it began, in San Francisco last season.

In 98 career games (24 starts), Breida gained 2,654 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry while scoring nine rushing touchdowns. He also hauled in 120 receptions for 935 yards and six touchdowns.

Although he saw significantly less time on special teams, Breida did return six kickoffs for 110 yards and recorded 10 tackles (seven solo).

During his time with the Giants, Breida served as a backup to superstar Saquon Barkley, who is now a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
