Fermin Lopez says Barcelona are in good spirits ahead of their Champions League clash with Newcastle after beating Athletic Club 1-0 in La Liga on Saturday night.

Lamine Yamal’s brilliant winner handed Barca all three points and saw them restore their four-point lead at the top of the table.

It was a good win at a difficult away ground for Hansi Flick’s side, and Lopez is expecting another tricky encounter at St James’ Park.

“We know we must maintain this advantage, and knowing Real Madrid won yesterday, it was crucial to get the win today. We did exactly that and we are thrilled. Now our focus turns to Tuesday,” he told reporters.

“We head into it in good spirits after the win. We also know we will face a similar match to the one here, in a very difficult stadium against a very physical opponent. We hope to put in a great performance, play our normal game and win.”

While Barca beat Athletic Club on Saturday night, Newcastle tasted defeat to Manchester City. The Magpies went down 3-1 to Pep Guardiola’s side in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
