First-Time Winner Giovanni Ruggiero Upsets the Field at Talladega
Twenty-one-year-old Giovanni Ruggiero collected his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory in the Love’s RV Stop 225 at Talladega Superspeedway, preventing any playoff driver from securing a berth in the Championship Four.
Heading into the Martinsville race in a week, regular season champion Corey Heim remains the only playoff driver in the Round of 8 to be guaranteed a spot in the Championship Four at Phoenix. Heim won the Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Roval event that kicked off the semifinal round.
Entering the Round of 8’s final race, Rajah Caruth is second in the standings, 14 points above the cutline, Tyler Ankrum is third, eight points to the good, while Kaden Honeycutt is fourth, five points above the cutline.
Those below the cutline are Ty Majeski at minus five and Layne Riggs with a six-point deficit. Danie Hemric and Grant Enfinger are in must-win situations at minus 32 and minus 40, respectively.
In the season’s 23rd race, Ruggiero led 37 laps, including the final seven in the 90-lap event that ended in overtime. Ruggiero defeated Heim by 0.059 second. There were 17 lead changes among 11 drivers in the race that was slowed by seven caution flags for 29 laps.
