Five-star running back includes Longhorns in his top five

Over the last few weeks, the Texas Longhorns have been busy building for their future. While they have added a few potential stars to their 2026 class, there is still a lot of talent left on the board. That includes talented running back Derek Cooper, who included the Longhorns in his top five on Thursday.

Although the Longhorns would love to add Cooper, they have a few programs to beat out. The other programs included in Cooper's top five are Georgia, Miami, Florida State, and Ohio State. Due to Cooper's ability to carry an offense, it is no surprise that some of the top coaches in the nation want him in their offense.

Currently, the Florid native is ranked as the 39th best player in his class by 247Sports. Miami is seen as the favorites however Cooper is keeping his options open before picking a landing spot. That is good news for Texas who could use a win on the recruiting trail.

The Longhorns 2026 class includes Dia Bell, Richard Weasley, John Turntine, and Jermain Bishop Jr. They will be tasked with helping Texas build on its recent success. Last season, Texas fell two wins short of winning a national title and made their second straight College Football playoff appearance.

Luckily, Texas won't have to wait long to find out Cooper's decision. He is set to announce his commitment in less than two weeks on July 20th. That gives the programs still in the mix time to make a final push

If Steve Sarkisian and his staff can get Cooper to Austin, then they will have another weapon to rely on. On a team already loaded with talent, Cooper would be a great fit.
