Florida football among 10 most overhyped programs of past decade
Until recently, the Florida football program had dealt with one of its deepest nadirs in program history, experiencing a tumultuous decade of ups and downs — with far more downs than ups.
Over the course of the past 10 years, the Gators saw three different head coaching changes. First, Jim McElwain took over for Will Muschamp in 2015, followed by Dan Mullen seizing the reins just three years later, while current skipper Billy Napier landed in Gainesville ahead of the 2022 campaign.
During that stretch, the Orange and Blue tallied a 77-50 overall record, which rounds out to a 65% success rate — hardly a number one would associate with a top-level team. To make matters worse, four of those 10 seasons ended with sub-.500 records, which represents a level of futility long last seen in the Swamp despite three 10-win seasons in that window as well.
It is worth noting that in addition to those three bright spots, Florida football's success under both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer earned the program a great deal of leeway with the sports media, as well as the fanbases, giving the Gators the benefit of the doubt in many circumstances when perhaps they did not deserve it.
With all that in mind, CBS Sports writer David Cobb conducted a study of college football's 10 most overhyped teams over the last decade, and unsurprisingly, Florida was one of those schools.
Why Florida football was overrated this last decade
"A strong finish to a brutally challenging 2024 slate and the emergence of rising sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway provide hope that Florida is turning the page. But the program's past 10 years featured the unfruitful tenure of Jim McElwain, the rise and fall of Dan Mullen and the unpleasantries of a slow start for Billy Napier," Cobb offers.
"Florida's three straight losing seasons from 2021-23 marked the first such run for the program since 1947-49. The past decade-plus has been humbling for a UF program that won seven SEC titles under Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer from 1993-08."
