Gameday thoughts: If not this year in The Swamp, when?
Florida is 3-7 and circling the drain to close out the 2025 campaign. Billy Napier is no more, DJ Lagway has been a complete bust and Lane Kiffin might pick LSU over the Gators. It would seem like this group has nothing to play for and simply would want the season to get over with, but Tennessee fans know better.
Some of the worst Gator teams in recent memory have found ways to beat the Volunteers, especially down in Gainesville. It’s been well documented that Tennessee hasn’t won in The Swamp since 2003, and a spread that sits at just 3.5 points doesn’t inspire much confidence. That line, in part, is because these Gators haven’t quit. It was worth wondering if they had following a blowout loss to Kentucky just two weeks ago. However, they gave Ole Miss a four-quarter game on the road, coming off of a four-quarter game in Jacksonville against Georgia.
Which team will Tennessee get tonight?
Timing of the game
This one has a very different feel to it heading down to Gainesville in November. You won’t get the swampy heat and humidity that you typically would in September — instead you’ll get a 70 degree night. Even more than that, you get a team that has already lost the ability to make it to a bowl, an interim head coach and frankly a fanbase that is caring a whole lot more about a coaching search than any game being played on the field right now.
Find a way to run the football
Tennessee faced a top five run defense against Oklahoma and could only muster 63 total yards on the ground. Against Florida, they face the 57th ranked rush defense in the country. Still, that really hasn’t mattered too much this season as the Volunteers have really struggled on the ground in conference play. That feels like something that has to change in the spot, especially with the recent turnover struggles from Joey Aguilar.
Speaking of…
Clean game from Joey Aguilar
The multi-turnover game can’t happen here. You kind of get the feeling that Aguilar has been pressing lately with Tennessee’s run-game struggles. Florida is beatable in the secondary, ranking 74th against the pass this season. Aguilar will always play an aggressive game, but the mistakes he made against Oklahoma and New Mexico State have to be cleaned up tonight.
Cut down on the mental mistakes
How many times has Tennessee been in a big spot and just continually shot themselves in the foot? Ten penalties against Georgia, ten against Alabama. Bizarre end of half clock management from Josh Heupel, fumbles, interceptions in the redzone — you name it, we’ve seen it from Tennessee this year. Going back to Gainesville in 2023, Tennessee was penalized ten more times.
It’s very cliché, but it’s been a consistent thorn in Heupel’s side, particularly on the road.
Josh Heupel needs this one
You know what Florida is at this point — they’re not a very good football team. No, they haven’t quit, but they’re finding ways to lose football games. Tennessee’s flat out better, but we also know that hasn’t alway equaled wins in this series. Tennessee is already on the outside looking in of the playoff picture sitting at 7-3 on the year. A loss here would not only breathe more fire into the Heupel-on-the-road narratives, but it would drop the Vols into a very real scenario of finishing 7-5 with Vanderbilt coming to town next weekend.
Dropping this one to Florida would be bad enough, losing two straight to end the year to Florida and Vanderbilt would be a disastrous way to end a season that could have so easily gone very differently.
Getting this one has the potential to change how we view this season overall. It’s a chance to check off a big box, no matter what the Gators’ record reads. Remember, nobody knew what this team was back in April when Nico Iamaleava hit the transfer portal. A win in Gainesville and entering the final weekend at 8-3? I think most Tennessee fans would have taken that with all the uncertainty the Vols were left with.
But the task remains — Heupel has to go get this one tonight in The Swamp.
