Glenn claims Senior Night wrestling win
The Glenn varsity wrestling teams turned in a strong performance in their Senior Night matches against North Forsyth on Jan. 15.
Seniors honored for their dedication to the program were Naydelin Colon Echeverria, Colzack Farrow, Diego Colon-Perez. Misael Rivera, Taylor Williams and Victoria Marcel.
The Bobcats varsity boys’ team collected a 52-6 victory over the Vikings. The Glenn girls’ team wrestled in individual matches against a short-handed Lady Vikings team.
“It was a really good night,” Glenn Head Coach Larry Barron said. “They did not have a full line up, but everyone who wrestled for us wrestled well. A first-year kid (Cameron Rose) for us in the 215-pound weight class who just joined us got a pin, and the gym erupted.”
The Bobcats boys’ varsity team improved to 9-1 with the win.
“Our only loss was to North Davidson. We had two forfeits and four first-year kids in the lineup. All the odds were against us, and we almost pulled it out. It was tied 39-39 and we lost on criteria because we had two forfeits and they had none. I would almost rather lose 89-0 than lose like that,” Barron said.
The Bobcats wrestling program also honored Glenn Athletic Director Joe McCormick on Jan. 15.
McCormick, a former longtime head wrestling coach at Glenn, said he will retire Aug. 31.
“It will be my 28th year in the school system,” McCormick said. “It is not like it is tomorrow, but I’ll be retired before wrestling season starts again, and that was my last home match as the athletic director. I was the wrestling coach for 15 years here and I am still close with the team. I was not expecting it. They gave me a gift card and a Glenn wrestling flag. I am glad they did it and I appreciate it.”
