Horseheads High School signing event features 35 seniors set compete in college
During a school year in which Horseheads High School has won numerous league and Section 4 titles, it should be no surprise a good chunk of the senior class has put itself in position to compete at the college level.
The school's annual recognition ceremony for senior athletes on Tuesday, May 20 saw 35 college-committed students head onto the stage at the Horseheads High auditorium to be celebrated for their achievements.
The group included five Division I college signees and five Division II commits.
It also featured a future two-sport college athlete in Anna Lowe, who plans to compete in swimming and lacrosse at SUNY Brockport. Her sister, Sibby, is headed to SUNY Geneseo for swimming.
Division I Binghamton University is the choice of soccer All-American Ben Church, all-state softball player Megan Wolf, and baseball pitcher Mason Holloway, who has authored two perfect games this season and was part of a third.
Robert Peckham, the first Horseheads player to earn first-team all-state honors in football after helping the Blue Raiders to the Section 4 Class AA title, has committed to play for Lackawanna College (Scranton, Pennsylvania), one of the top JUCO programs in the nation.
"They have a good track record of kids moving on to big-time Division I schools. Just going there and develop a little more and hopefully move on," Peckham said.
Peckham said it was an honor being part of Tuesday's ceremony and spoke highly of his classmates.
"We all just work really hard and put in the work, lifting weights and everything," he said.
Damian Saks, the district's athletic director, joined Horseheads Central School District Superintendent Thomas Douglas in sharing words of praise and encouragement.
Douglas asked senior athletes to stand up, which led to a loud round of applause.
"I want to thank you for everything you've done to make your teams, your colleagues shine," Douglas said. "But most of all, I want to thank your parents for giving us such great students, student-athletes, and the ability to offer these programs for you to shine and for the community to prosper.
"Go on to the next level, have fun. If you can, come on back, share what you've done, inspire others."
