How will the Commanders snap their current losing streak? Sam Cosmi breaks it down
Sam Cosmi realizes the Washington Commanders are out on an island.
Cosmi, Washington's starting right guard, was a guest on 106.7 The Fan Tuesday with JP Finlay and Steve Czaban filling in for Brian Mitchell. Cosmi spoke of how he realizes no other NFL team will come to Ashburn to help the Commanders out of this terrible season.
"The only people that are going to pull us out of this, is us," expressed Cosmi. "Like I said, (I am not trying to compare seasons), but I've been a part of a season that was rocky, that 2023 season. And the way I view this, and these moments, is just bring guys closer. Try to bring guys closer and keep positivity."
Yes, 2023 was a miserable season, and of course, it being a different season, there were differing reasons. It was new owner Josh Harris's first season, and everyone knew from training camp that if Ron Rivera did not have a winning season, he would be fired. After all, Rivera had coached three seasons in Washington and had yet to produce a winning record. Also, a major source of frustration was that Sam Howell was a young quarterback who could throw a good ball in practice but was really struggling in games. Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy didn't help matters either, with his approach, which lost players as early as training camp.
This is 2025; the results are similar, but the reasons are very different. The team was great at winning close games in 2024, finishing 12-5, then winning two playoff games on the road. The expectations for this season were huge! So the element of surprise and mystery, which lead to befuddlement, are very real as well.
"For me, individually, I always have to say, 'Just be part of the solution, not the problem.' Do my job and be as positive as possible. You know, if anybody needs help along the way, just try to carry them with you. So, that's my outlook on that. I know everybody here is working their tail off. To be honest with you, I just don't know what is going on, on that side of the ball."
Cosmi has had enough to worry about this season, coming off of ACL injury and surgery. Cosmi worked his way through rehab and returned to action against the Cowboys. He has now been back for the last four games, all ending in bad losses for the Commanders.
You could hear in his voice that he is dumbfounded by how this team is losing so much and so badly. Yet, you could also pick up on, for Cosmi, the bigger picture that he has recovered and can contribute again, and work toward being part of the solution. For that, Cosmi is thankful.
