Huskies fall to Selah, will host crossover game
May 15—SELAH — The Huskies baseball team (19-5) fell 4-1 to the Selah Vikings on Tuesday in the District 5 2A finals. The Huskies were coming off a dominant win over Ellensburg but were unable to get home again after the first inning.
"We knew it would be tough to try to get a win on the road, so our approach was, just put the ball in play and try to keep pressure on the defense, and we did that for a few innings, and then we kind of fell off there," head coach Sonny Garza said.
In the first inning, Hilario Gonzalez IV was up to bat and hit the ball into the outfield, allowing Xzyyvn Martinez to get home for their only score of the game. From there, the Huskie defense did their best to hold off Selah, but eventually they started allowing runs.
"We weren't putting enough pressure on the defense and putting the ball in play and making them make plays," Garza said.
Selah was able to string together four runs throughout the ensuing seven innings that were played. In the seventh inning, the Huskies had one more chance to make a run and were able to get some players on base. However, they were thrown out before anyone could get home and Selah secured the district title.
In the team huddle after the game, Garza delivered a clear message to his players:
"It's do or die now," he said.
The Huskies will have another chance at states in a District 6 crossover game.
"We're still in it, so we're gonna keep grinding, it's always good to be at home and you get your fans there, you know, you get your people behind you, so we're excited to be hosting a game," Garza said.
The Huskies will host the Pullman Greyhounds (15-7) at Othello High School on Saturday.
