Idaho to renew football rivalry with Boise State

Feb. 12—The Boise State Broncos and Idaho Vandals will once again clash on the football field.

For the first time in 16 years, BSU and UI fans have a football game to look forward to — even if it's still five years away.

During a speech Thursday morning in Boise, Idaho Gov. Brad Little — flanked by Joe Vandal, Buster Bronco, Idaho athletic director Terry Gawlik and BSU athletic director Jeremiah Dickey — announced the schools' football teams will play each other on Sept. 6, 2031, in Boise.

The renewed rivalry will mark the first meeting between the programs since Boise State defeated Idaho 52-14 on Nov. 12, 2010, in Moscow.

"We are excited to renew our rivalry with Boise State and get back on the football field in 2031," Gawlik said in a news release. "We know how much this game means for both fan bases and the entire Gem State."

The game will be the 41st all-time meeting between the once longtime rivals. Boise State leads the series just 22-17-1, but it was a lopsided affair in its final decade before going on hiatus.

BSU has 12 straight games against UI with the Vandals' last win coming 36-35 in overtime in 1998 in Boise.

The Vandals enjoyed most of their success in the series in the 1980s and '90s, when UI won 12 straight of its own.

The teams have played 20 times in Boise, splitting the series there 10-10, including the famous 62-16 and 64-19 Idaho victories in 1992 and 1996.
