Jake Paul secures unanimous decision win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. after late push
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Hate Jake Paul all you want. He continues to thrive off that energy.
That was the case yet again Saturday night at Honda Center, where Paul defeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision in front of a heavily pro-Mexican crowd. Paul didn't exactly embarass Chavez Jr. the way he promised leading up to the fight, but he still saw it that way.
"It was flawless," Paul said afterward. "I think I only got hit 10 times, really only needed to survive, and I thought I did great. … He's in there with Canelo, all those guys, and I embarassed him."
In reality, Paul outlasted him, and that was partly because of Chavez Jr.'s reluctance in the first half of the fight. It wasn't until the sixth that Chavez Jr. started picking up the pace, but he was facing an uphill battle.
By Round 9, Chavez Jr. started letting his hands go, while Paul's hung low, and "The Problem Child" ate some good shots. To Paul's credit, he got through perhaps the toughest round of his career in the 10th.
Those six minutes aside, the fight was all Paul.
"Easy work, Year 5, wait 'till I get going, motherf*ckers," Paul said.
Afterward, Paul called out everyone under the sun – from Canelo Alvarez to Gilberto Ramirez to Badu Jack and everyone in between. After spending 30 minutes in the ring with him, Chavez Jr. isn't so sure Paul's ready for the big-big time.
"He's a strong, good boxer the first three, four rounds," Chavez Jr. said. "After that, he got tired. I don't think he's ready for the champions, but he did great."
