Kalen DeBoer updates Alabama QB competition entering spring practice

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer recently took a moment to speak about the Crimson Tide’s current quarterback battle following the first two practices of the spring.

Coach DeBoer and his staff will undoubtedly have a tough decision to make in the future. The Tide currently find themselves in the midst of a quarterback battle between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell, as each signal caller has looked excellent throughout Alabama’s first two practices this week.

DeBoer went in-depth as to how each signal caller has performed during the first two practices of the spring, with the Alabama head coach praising both quarterbacks’ improvement compared to last year.

“You can tell that they have a number of reps from last year under their belt," DeBoer stated. "Playing with confidence, calling the play in the huddle with confidence. Both of them are light years ahead of where they were a year ago, and obviously they should be."

"The talent level as far as that's concerned is not a question, it’s just a matter of them building the rapport with their skill around them. Making the throws when they are there, feeling the timing and trust, and just feeling comfortable in the pocket. That just comes with time feeling comfortable with your offensive line doing the job up front. I like what they have done through two practices. Create some good explosives on their end, good feel, and working the mobility when they have to.”

Russell was ranked as the No. 2 quarterback and the No. 2 overall player from the class of 2025, per the 247Sports Composite rankings. Both Mack and Russell served as the second-and-third string quarterbacks to Ty Simpson last season, respectively, as each player is an extremely talented signal caller that could easily flourish as the Tide’s starter next season.

Coach DeBoer and his staff are expected to continue evaluating each quarterback as spring practice continues.
