Louis Riddick: 3 goals for Commanders to avoid a Jayden Daniels' sophomore slump
Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels took the league by storm in 2025, and everyone expects him to continue the success he saw in 2024. The problem is that Daniels is entering his second year of professional play, and like in high school and college, the sophomore slump is a real thing. There are players on every team who go through it; they knock everyone's socks off in their first season and then disappear in year two.
The Commanders already have their ears perked up over this and are doing what they can to support Daniels so he does not endure a slump in 2025. ESPN's Louis Riddick says there are three goals for avoiding the dreaded sophomore slump.

"Jayden Daniels himself is the least of my worries, I'm not worried about him at all. I think Dan Quinn really already expressed that, so when you're talking about why do quarterbacks regress, a lot of times, it's about things that surround them," Riddick says. "First and foremost, it's about keeping people healthy around him. Meaning, keeping the roster intact and making sure that the guys are available for 16-17 games."
Riddick's second goal is that the Commanders have to improve the players around him, which they have done by bringing in Deebo Samuel, Laremy Tunsil, and others.
Third, the Commanders need to keep the coaching team intact, which they did as well.
So, the support for Daniels is there. The Commanders are already doing the things they need to do to help him prevent a sophomore slump, but Daniels has to do his part, too. He needs to keep his routines the same, his work ethic has to be at 100%, and he can't be complacent.
If Daniels suffered a sophomore slump, and that's a pretty big 'if', he won't be the first. But don't put it past him to rebound and be just as great for the remainder of his career as he was in year one.
