LSU baseball lands top prospect as catcher passes on minor league baseball

One of the top high school catchers will pass up the minor leagues and play for LSU baseball.

Omar Serna took to social media and said, "Decision made, see you in Baton Rouge."

According to MLB.com's draft rankings, Serna is the No. 132-ranked player in the class. That includes all eligible high school and college players. Serna is a coup for Jay Johnson and staff.

Serna is the top-ranked catcher in the state of Texas, making it the third consecutive year in which Texas's top catcher committed to LSU. Blake Mitchell didn't make it to campus in 2023 after being selected No. 8 overall, but the Tigers landed Cade Arrambide last year.

The MLB.com scouting report states Serna is a similar player to Arrambide, thanks to raw power and arm strength.

"Serna's bat speed and the strength in his 6-foot-2, 225-pound frame give him prodigious pop that plays to all fields," writes MLB.com.

Serna isn't a finished product yet, though. Scouts say his big swing creates liability against breaking balls and while Serna has a strong arm, his defense could stand to improve.

LSU retained assistant coach Josh Jordan, LSU's catcher's coach, after a brief flirtation with the Duke head coaching job. That's good news for Serna.

With Luis Hernandez moving on, LSU's catching gig is wide open in 2026. Johnson isn't shy about playing true freshman behind the plate. We saw Brady Neal get some time in 2023 and Arrambide saw occasional action in 2025.
