LSU football's run game remains a question mark. Here's Brian Kelly's take.

Fixing the run game was atop of LSU football's agenda this offseason. After Jayden Daniels led a dynamic rushing attack in 2023, LSU struggled to replace Daniels' production in 2024. LSU's ground game fell short of expectations.

Three weeks into fall camp, results have been mixed. LSU is talented upfront, but the Tigers are still working through some things in the run game.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly addressed the concerns last week.

"You have to trust it and be confident in it. And trust and confidence can't be built if you don't do it. And so you have to be committed to it. I think it's like anything else. We have to be committed to those situations where everybody knows you're going to run the ball, and you still have to run the ball. That, to me, is the litmus test. How good is your run game?" Kelly said.

LSU failed that test last year. On several occasions when LSU needed a yard or two, the Tigers failed to get push.

"They know you're running it. Everybody knows you're running it and you still run it. I think that that's what we're going into this season with that mindset of there's going to be times that you know that we're running the ball and we have to impose our will on you," Kelly said.

According to PFF, LSU's run block grade in 2024 was 58.2, which ranked 12th in the SEC. LSU's offensive line was expected to be among the best in the country after returning four starters from the unit that was a finalist for the Joe Moore award.

LSU brought in former Florida State OC Alex Atkins to work as the run game coordinator and coach tight ends.

"Look, one of the most difficult jobs is to move somebody against their will. It's an offensive lineman moving a defensive lineman who doesn't want to move. Sometimes that's just mental. But if we're easy at coming off that, right, that determination of wanting to run the ball, then they will be too. So we've got to be a little bit hard-headed sometimes and impose our will from that perspective," Kelly said.

LSU is hoping for a boost at the running back position, too. Caden Durham was just a freshman in 2024 and still surpassed 1,000 total yards. Now a sophomore, an All-SEC campaign could be in the fold for Durham. LSU is also hoping to get more out of Nussmeier in the run game.

LSU's offensive line will be tested early. The Tigers open the season at Clemson on Aug. 30 vs. one of the best defensive fronts in college football.
