Man Utd wipe out Ruben Amorim’s last credit as they set the record straight
Manchester United are moving to erase Ruben Amorim’s only positive legacy at the club
Ruben Amorim’s time in charge of Manchester United didn’t leave much behind, and now even the one thing he did get right is being quietly undone by the club.
The results were poor, his style never took hold, and he pushed away some of the squad’s biggest names before losing his job. Michael Carrick has only made that look worse since stepping in.
Carrick has already made a strong start, which only highlighted how poorly things were going under Amorim. And it seems any credit for what came before him is fading quickly.
One of those was Kobbie Mainoo. Even after Amorim left, some fans gave him credit for recognising Mainoo’s potential and bringing him into the first team earlier than expected.
Mainoo had been seen as a future talent while coming through the academy, but few expected him to make such an impact so soon. Amorim saw something others missed and gave Mainoo more playing time than anyone predicted.
Kobbie Mainoo Took Time to Settle In Before Thriving Under Michael Carrick
Mainoo struggled early on with issues like confidence and maturity, but after an initial spell out of the team under Carrick, he was brought back stronger. The young midfielder developed quickly over time and eventually thrived under his new manager.
Michael Carrick deserves most of the credit for his rise. He played a key role in improving Mainoo’s confidence and maturity during their time together at Manchester United.
Man Utd clarify the story around dressing room culture
Even as results and performances dipped badly under Ruben Amorim, one of the main reasons fans held back from turning on him completely was the perception that he’d helped clean up Manchester United’s dressing room.
For the first time in a while, the squad looked like it had real discipline, with Amorim’s strict approach to professionalism earning praise. Players like Antony, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho were moved out, and new faces brought in to change the tone.
Amorim was seen as a big reason why professionalism and accountability returned to Carrington, something Diogo Dalot spoke about not long ago. But now that narrative is being challenged by recent reports.
A report from The Telegraph quotes club sources saying that players like Garnacho, Sancho, Rashford, and Antony would have been moved on regardless of who was manager. Amorim wasn’t behind those decisions; they were already part of the wider rebuild plans.
This puts an asterisk next to what was seen as Amorim’s only positive legacy at United. It raises questions about how much influence he really had behind the scenes during his time at Old Trafford.
Club’s comments on Amorim reflect growing doubts
It’s ironic that Amorim is viewed by some as a martyr for challenging the board over control, only to then be praised for decisions he didn’t actually make. The narrative around his time at United has become increasingly muddled.
From the start, it was clear the club and Amorim were on the same page regarding those players’ futures. In reality, his approach may have even hurt United’s position in the transfer market rather than helped it.
The report mentioned above supports what many suspected – that Ineos brought about a cultural reset, and Amorim just happened to be in place when it took effect.
There’s also a tendency to overlook that players didn’t quit under Erik ten Hag either, especially those brought in during Ineos’ tenure.
Amorim wasn’t a saviour who fixed United’s standards. He was someone who recognised he was out of his depth, engineered his own exit, and ended up taking credit for changes he didn’t implement.
The rebuild was going to happen with or without him; he simply found himself there when it began.
