Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood signs new contract to 2027

Manchester City captain Alex Greenwood signs new contract to 2027Alex Greenwood has signed a contract extension with Manchester City to keep her at the club until 2027.

The City captain’s previous deal had been due to expire in the summer of 2026, having last signed fresh terms in December 2022.

Greenwood, 32, has made 152 appearances for the Women’s Super League side since joining from Lyon in September 2020, winning the FA Cup and League Cup.

She was also a key player in England’s 2025 European Championship-winning campaign, her second Euros title, starting all six matches at the tournament in Switzerland.

The defender had started all of City’s league matches this season until sustaining an injury at the end of October which is set to keep her out for “a number of weeks”. City are unbeaten since losing their league opener against champions Chelsea and sit top of the WSL after eight matches.

“I’m really excited for what’s to come,” Greenwood said in a press release on Wednesday.

“I’m excited by the players, the new manager. And the start has been really positive, but I know there’s still so much more to come from this team. I would love nothing more than to lift more silverware at this football club.”

City appointed Andree Jeglertz as their new head coach in July, having parted ways with Gareth Taylor in March and finished in fourth with Nick Cushing in interim charge for the final months of the campaign.

‘One of the game’s best defenders’

Experienced, reliable, versatile.

At 32 years old, Greenwood is still one of the game’s best defenders and City are only better for securing her signature both in an on-pitch and off-pitch capacity.

New young defenders in the City squad such as Rebecca Knaak and Jade Rose have continued to glean valuable defensive skills and savvy from Greenwood on the pitch. Her influence in the dressing room also remains one of the most important in the City squad, particularly with new head coach Jeglertz at the helm as he tries to implement not only a new style but new mentality at the club.

In many ways, Greenwood isn’t appreciated enough and is often one taken for granted until injuries pull her away and expose holes in a team. As City bid to compete with Chelsea at the top of the WSL and return to Europe, Greenwood’s pedigree and quality will be crucial.
