If Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Max Scherzer doesn’t typically mind when opposing players flip their bat after a home run, he’s not sure why Little League cares.

Scherzer spoke out on Friday in defense of Marco Rocco, a 12-year-old Little League player in New Jersey. A judge recently lifted a suspension against Rocco, who was suspended earlier this week for flipping his bat in celebration.

“It’s a human reaction, and it’s good for the game, just like a pitcher doing a fist pump after a big strikeout,” Scherzer said.

At the same time, Scherzer acknowledged that not every situation is the same.

“I side-eye someone if they hit a solo shot and their team is down 5-0,” Scherzer said. “That doesn’t jive with me. I don’t like it when opponents or teammates do that. I feel the same way about Little Leaguers.”

Elsewhere in the American League East, New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm called the punishment “ridiculous.”

“You’re going to suspend a kid for having fun?” Chisholm said. “Crazy.”

We’ll see if Chisholm and the Yankees eventually welcome Rocco and his teammates to Yankee Stadium. It certainly sounds like he has a fan in at least one All-Star slugger and a future Hall of Fame pitcher.
