Micah Parsons among 8 standouts from Packers' Week 1 win over the Lions

After going 1-5 against the NFC North last season, Sunday's matchup against the reigning divisional champs meant a lot to the Green Bay Packers. Matt LaFleur's team responded by defeating the Detroit Lions in dominating fashion, 27-13, to begin the 2025 season.Jordan Love and the offense came out firing on all cylinders, converting a pair of third downs on their opening 83-yard touchdown drive. Green Bay also unveiled its new star pass rusher, Micah Parsons, who wasted no time making his presence felt.After jumping out to an early lead, the Packers never looked back. The defensive game plan was masterful, generating four sacks and holding the Lions to less than 250 yards of total offense. Last season, Detroit's dynamic backfield, led by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, averaged 146.4 rushing yards per game. On Sunday, they finished with 46 as a team.From Jeff Hafley's unit shutting down the Lions offense to Love leading five scoring drives, there were positive performances on both sides of the ball coming out of Green Bay's statement win in Week 1.Let's highlight the standouts.

Edge Micah Parsons

The much-anticipated debut was worth the price of admission.Parsons immediately showcased what he can bring to the Packers' defense, generating pressure on his very first snap of the game to force an incompletion. Green Bay's new star edge rusher made several impactful plays, including another pressure that led to an interception for safety Evan Williams.However, the play that really stole the show was his chase down sack on Jared Goff late in the fourth quarter. Parsons was limited to just 29 snaps but still came away with a sack and finished second on the team with three pressures, according to ESPN Research.

QB Jordan Love

Love was excellent on Sunday, completing 16 out of 22 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns for a 128.6 passer rating that would have been his second-highest a season ago.He connected with Romeo Doubs on a 20-yard pass to jump-start the first drive before delivering a dime over the middle to Tucker Kraft for a 15-yard score. Jayden Reed was on the receiving end of the second touchdown, another beautifully placed ball by Love.  Love's play cooled off a bit in the second half and had some throws he would like to have back, but tossing a pair of touchdowns and completing passes to 10 different receivers was a nice way to start the season.

S Evan Williams

The Packers' defense had no issue taking the ball away in 2024. They are off to a good start this season thanks to Evan Williams (and Parsons).Parsons generated quick pressure against Goff on a 3rd-and-7, forcing an ill-advised throw to Amon-Ra St. Brown that Williams undercut. It was a momentum-shifting play that allowed Green Bay to keep its 17-3 lead heading into halftime.

It's only been one game, but Williams has matched his interception total from a rookie season in which he showed a lot of promise.

LBs Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker

If the Packers' run defense was supposed to take a hit after losing Kenny Clark, don't tell their two playmaking linebackers.Cooper and Walker seemed to be everywhere on the field at once on Sunday, with both playing pivotal roles in shutting down Gibbs and Montgomery. Cooper finished with a team-leading 12 combined tackles that also marked a new career-high, while Walker had nine total tackles, including two tackles for loss.When the Packers paired Cooper with Walker last season, this is exactly what they envisioned.After a promising rookie campaign, Cooper appears primed for a second-year jump, while Walker did a solid job of showcasing how valuable he can be to the defense as he seeks a long-term deal.

DT Devonte Wyatt

It was Wyatt who closed the door on any chance of a Lions comeback deep into the fourth quarter. With the Packers leading 24-6, the Lions faced a 4th-and-2 from their own 35. Using his speed, Wyatt blew past rookie center Tate Ratledge to sack Goff for an 8-yard loss.

Wyatt had five sacks in 14 games last season, leading the Packers to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2026 season. Now in a full-time starting role, expectations are high around Wyatt, and he answered the call in Week 1.

Edge Rashan Gary

Gary will be one of the biggest beneficiaries with Parsons entering the mix this season. He won't have to face as many double teams, allowing him to get more one-on-one looks against offensive tackles.One of those opportunities presented itself to start the fourth quarter, and Gary took advantage, driving back left tackle Taylor Decker before taking down Goff. Now in his seventh season, Gary started on the right foot by securing his 40th career sack.

Edge Lukas Van Ness

Green Bay sacked Goff four times on Sunday, which means one more unaccounted for. Half of it belongs to Van Ness, who, along with Gary, secured the first sack of the day during the third quarter.With Parsons and Gary on the edges, Van Ness kicked inside on third down and beat Christian Mahogany to help collapse the pocket and force a Lions punt.

ESPN Research had Van Ness registering four pressures on the day to lead the Packers. He also made a couple of nice stops in the run game to finish with four total tackles.All the hype surrounding Van Ness heading into the 2025 season saw good early returns in Week 1, as the former 13th overall pick appears ready to make a jump in Year 3.
