Mike Vrabel reveals why Patriots cut promising training camp standout

The release of New England Patriots cornerback D.J. James, a training camp standout, came as a mild surprise when it was reported on Tuesday.

When asked about the release, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel chalked the decision up to the team wanting to give other players an opportunity. James played on two defensive snaps and five special-teams snaps in Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

He made one tackle in the game.

The decision to move on from James at this point is a head-scratcher with the team already thin at cornerback, especially with All-Pro defensive back Christian Gonzalez dealing with a hamstring injury.

James played at a high level throughout the preseason. The Auburn product even recorded an interception in the preseason opener against the Washington Commanders on August 8.

He has flashed enough potential to show that he might be a valuable pickup for a team looking to add additional depth to their secondary.
