No. 1 UCLA baseball leaves no doubt in 12-run inning against Iowa

No. 1 UCLA baseball left no doubt in 19-0 thrashing of Iowa in second game of series at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City on Saturday.

After a defensive-oriented game one to open the series, the Bruins put together an explosive second inning to take over the second game of the series. UCLA's pitchers had themselves a shutout with senior right-handed pitcher Michael Barnett pitching just over five innings on the mound and allowing three hits for no runs and throwing five strikeouts. Senior right-handed pitcher Jack O'Connor came in relief and gave up no runs in his two hits allowed, while tacking on a strikeout of his own.

Opening lead

The Bruins ended the first with the lead from a single hit and Iowa walking two of UCLA's batters resulting in one run crossing the plate, setting the tone for more to come for the Bruins.

The calm before the storm

Neither UCLA nor Iowa was able to get the better of their opponent's pitching staff in the second or third inning with both teams managing one hit over the course of the innings.

Cashing on mistakes

UCLA's batters put together an explosive fourth with the first four runs coming from two bases loaded batters being hit by a pitch and two more getting walked. A single and another walk would lead to two more runs ahead of freshman infielder's Cadiz Dominic's grand slam. The Bruins would end with one more homer to conclude a six hit and 12-run fourth inning to put UCLA up 13-0.

Adding on

The Bruins carried on the scoring spree with their batters swinging to everywhere on the field and adding two runs in the fifth from their three hits. UCLA went three outs in three pitches in the sixth, which kept them ahead 15-0 headed into the seventh.

Wrapping it up

UCLA closed out the game in the seventh with four hits and four runs, although the Bruins were once again the beneficiary of being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Hawkeyes reached base twice, but were unable to push across a run to give the Bruins the shutout.
