Following a fantastic second half that helped the Newcastle Knights win 26–22 in golden point, head coach Adam O'Brien expressed regret for his earlier comments on the crowd's jeering during halftime.
As the Knights failed to score any points in the first half, several fans at McDonald Jones Stadium were heard and observed becoming irate.
After the game, O'Brien defended his team vehemently, accusing the detractors of having no knowledge of rugby league. His remarks appeared to disparage fans who have supported the team during difficult times, as observers in the sports media and among the fan base quickly pointed out.
Acknowledging the response, O'Brien made a formal statement that was posted on the Newcastle Knights' official website. He said in a sincere and thoughtful manner:
“I apologize unreservedly to our members and fans that I offended, and I can understand why they would be offended. I was not prepared for that question, and I went straight into protection mode for our playing group. That’s not an excuse. I’m here to own it.”
O'Brien stated that his initial remarks were not a reflection of his lack of regard for the supporters, but rather an attempt to protect his players. He claimed that after giving it some thought, he let his emotions get the better of him since he did not want to express his true feelings and that the Knights' supporters are always loyal and wise.
The Knights' victory provided their fans some hope amid the challenging season by putting them in 14th place in the NRL. O'Brien wants to strengthen the bonds between the squad and its loyal fans, as evidenced by his apologies.
