OU running back to enter transfer portal

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to lose a veteran ballcarrier to the transfer portal. Senior running back Jovantae Barnes is expected to hit the portal when it officially opens on January 2nd, after spending four years in Norman, as he was part of OU's 2022 recruiting class.

Barnes played in just the first four games of the 2025 season, opening the year as the starter, before ceding playing time to the duo of Tory Blaylock and Xavier Robinson. He didn't play for the rest of the season, and preserved his redshirt, meaning he'll have one more season of eligibility left. His departure is not an unexpected one for the Sooners.

Barnes carried the ball 294 times for 1,281 yards and 12 touchdowns in his career with the Sooners, adding 28 receptions for 188 yards and a score. His best season came in 2024, where he led Oklahoma in rushing, despite missing the final three games of the year. During a dreadful season offensively, Barnes was the only reliable threat for the Sooners, before being injured.

With both Blaylock (a freshman) and Robinson (a sophomore) unable to leave for the NFL Draft yet, the expectation is that they'll both return to form a one-two punch in the backfield for Oklahoma next year. On the other hand, Barnes will play his fifth season of college ball elsewhere, and he'll look to finish out his career on a high note.
