Panthers HC Dave Canales is asked if the team is looking to add a CB
Even with a few big fish out there in the open waters, the Carolina Panthers seem content at cornerback . . . at least for now.
Tuesday's session of organized team activities ended on an interception by second-year defender Shemar Bartholomew, one of nine corners currently on Carolina's active roster. Appropriately enough, head coach Dave Canales was asked about the depth of the position after the outing.
"Shemar, Akay's [Akayleb Evans] doing a great job, Corey Thornton has shown up a couple of times and made some plays—so really feel good about the competition that's happening there," Canales stated. "Chau Smith-Wade, of course, plays inside and outside. And he's having a really great spring, just carrying over schematically and he looks great."
For the second year in a row, the Panthers are projected to enter the season with Pro Bowler Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson as their starting outside corners. But behind them sits a string of young and unproven talent in Bartholomew, Smith-Wade, Evans, MJ Devonshire and three undrafted rookies.
So, Canales was then asked if the team is looking into adding at the spot through free agency.
"We're always looking," he replied. "We're always open, we're always looking. But right now, I feel good about the group that's competing out there."
Some notable free-agent cornerbacks include former Panthers Stephon Gilmore, Rasul Douglas and Shaquill Griffin, Asante Samuel Jr. and Mike Hilton.
The trade market may also be an option—with Miami's Jalen Ramsey and Green Bay's Jaire Alexander believed to be potentially available.
