Patriots HC Mike Vrabel provides a somewhat positive update on CB Christian Gonzalez

Christian Gonzalez has not practiced since the end of July, having been sidelined with a hamstring injury. And because of that, he has missed the New England Patriots' first two games of the 2025 season.

Despite the Patriots coming away with the win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, there was one glaring issue on defense. So what's the simple solution?

The Patriots need their star cornerback back out there.

And now, as New England turns the page to the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Vrabel isn't ruling anything out just yet.

“There’s a chance,” Vrabel said on WEEI on Monday.

Shortly after, Vrabel was asked about this comment, and added a little more context while still not giving much away.

"It's a chance. There's a chance that a lot of things could happen," he told reporters. "It's Monday, and we'll figure out how he progresses along the week, and we'll see what he can do."

With Gonzalez sidelined, Alex Austin has been filling in, but he doesn't have the speed to match up with some of these wide receivers. That was evident when Austin allowed a 47-yard reception to Tyreek Hill. Marcus Jones and Carlton Davis have also stepped up in Gonzalez's absence.

But there's no denying the impact he has when he's on the field. So, hopefully, he is on track to make his season debut in Week 3.
