Posh opportunity boosts women's team promotion bid
Peterborough United's women's side hope playing at the Weston Homes Stadium is a "sign of what's to come in the future" for the team.
They have been invited to mark International Women's Day on Sunday with a rare appearance at the home of the city's League One club, against Worcester City.
Currently second in Women's National League Division One Midlands, having won 13 of their 15 games so far and drawn the other two, they have just one point to make up on leaders Boldmere St Michaels.
"We're very grateful to have this opportunity but I think it's really well earned," goalkeeper Sophie Harris told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.
"The amount of work the players have put in, in and out of training, and the staff behind the scenes.
"International Women's Day - I think we've all been influenced by a female figure in our lives, so it's a really good time to bring people down.
"I know a lot of people are bringing their mums, their siblings and grandmas - to watch and come together."
Posh Women normally play at Pims Park, the home of National League North side Peterborough Sports, but the 15,000 capacity Weston Homes Stadium is a big step up - and they have not appeared there since 2022.
"With the push for promotion this season, a lot of time and energy have gone into it so it's a really good opportunity to celebrate that - and I think it's just a sign of what's to come in the future," said Harris.
"It's been a massive help moving ground [to Pims Park] to make it more central, and we've really put an emphasis on getting people to come and watch to try to build numbers, and they have massively built this season.
"Seeing if we can fill out as much of the stadium as we can is the next goal."
'This is just the beginning'
Harris herself will not be involved against Worcester, having sat out most of the season because of injury, so Neive Corry will again be between the posts and looking to extend a run of eight clean sheets in the league.
"I had surgery on my wrist in December so I'm now on the recovery path. I've been in the gym to try and strengthen it, Harris said.
"To actually play in a league game would be great but I'm looking to next season now.
"Seeing Neive putting in these performances and getting the clean sheets, we're part of the goalkeepers' union, and it's great to watch - she puts in so much hard work and effort."
The Worcester game is the first of seven Peterborough have before the end of the season - including a crucial trip to Boldmere St Michaels on 22 March.
"Promotion is the main aim but we're just taking it one step at a time and not getting too far ahead of ourselves," Harris said.
"This is just the beginning and we're all really excited for it."
