Ranking Bills free agent additions by potential impact

The Buffalo Bills signed several free agents this offseason to supplement their roster. Some of these new faces will contend for starting snaps, while others will battle to fill out the reserve spots on a weekly basis. 

All told, the Bills signed unrestricted free agents to a possible total of over $81 million this offseason. 

The Bills Wire examines these new editions and their possible impact on Buffalo this season. Here are our rankings of the top five free agent signings for the Bills.  

Edge Joey Bosa

The Buffalo Bills made a bold move by bringing in Bosa and signing him to a one-year, $12 million, prove-it deal. The Bills have been in the market for an elite pass rusher, and Bosa fits the bill.

Bosa has been named to the Pro Bowl five times in his nine NFL seasons. The veteran has eclipsed double-digit sack totals in four of his NFL campaigns. 

The biggest issue with Bosa is his health. Bosa has played in only 28 games over the past three seasons. The injury bug already crept up during OTAs, as Bosa suffered a calf injury and missed field time with the Bills. He is expected to be fully healthy for training camp. 

The hope is that Bosa can make a splash in the same way that Von Miller did during his initial season in Buffalo. The Bills need a pass rush specialist. As long as Bosa can remain healthy, there’s optimism that he can return to his dominant self. A double-digit sack total is not out of the realm of possibilities for Bosa in Buffalo this year. 

WR Joshua Palmer

Palmer has the inside track to start wide for Buffalo’s offense. He will join Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir as the starting trio for the wide receivers in Buffalo. 

Palmer is an above-average route runner. Last year, he was among the league’s best in creating separation.

Palmer’s most productive season was in 2022, when he started 11 games and played in all 16 games. Palmer totaled 72 catches, 769 receiving yards, and three touchdowns. While playing with one of the top quarterbacks in the game, Palmer could surpass these totals easily. 

DT Larry Ogunjobi

The Bills are looking for a bit more from the interior of their defensive line. Enger Ojunjobi. 

The veteran is a solid space eater in the interior of the defensive line. He has the athleticism to cause problems against the run and the pass. 

Ogunjobi racked up a career-best seven sacks in 2021. He returns to a 4-3 defensive scheme in Buffalo, which should help fit his skill set. 

The only knock on Ogunjobi: he will face a six-game suspension to start the season. When he returns, though, Ogunjobi should add a jolt to the defensive line. 

DL Michael Hoecht

Hoecht is a versatile defender who can play both along the defensive line and at linebacker. He was also a special teams ace, blocking three field goals last season. 

Because of Hoecht’s flexibility, he can be disguised in Sean McDermott’s defensive schemes. He can rush the passer and drop into coverage, making it difficult for opposing quarterbacks to read defensive alignments. 

Hoecht recorded 173 tackles and 13.5 sacks over the past three seasons. 

Hoecht will miss the first six games this season due to a suspension. In a similar case to Ogunjobi, Hoecht should add some energy to the defense when he returns to the field. 

CB Tre’Davious White

White was a standout during his first tenure with the Bills from 2017-2023. White earned two Pro Bowl nods and All-Pro honors with Buffalo. Injuries derailed his time with the Bills, and White signed with Los Angeles in 2024. 

While things did not work out well in Los Angeles. However, Baltimore picked up White midseason, and White found his footing once again. 

A fan favorite, White returns to Buffalo with a chance to start once again. He will battle with Dane Jackson and Maxwell Hairston for starting snaps on the defense. 

White’s biggest impact, though, could be as a mentor to Hairston. White’s experience and character will contribute favorably to the secondary group.
