Robert Lewandowski on target as Poland keep World Cup 2026 hopes alive and set up date with Roony Bardghji’s Sweden
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski was on target for Poland on Thursday night as Jan Urban’s side came from behind to beat Albania in their World Cup play-off semi-final.
Albania took the lead right before half-time but Lewandowski hit back just after the hour to level. Sebastian Szymański’s ball into the box was headed home by the striker at the far post for 1-1.
The goal was Lewandowski’s 35th in World Cup qualifying and his 89th in total for Poland.
Poland then took the lead 10 minutes later through Piotr Zielinksi and managed to hold on to secure victory and keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Lewandowski and Co. now go on to play Sweden for a place at this summer’s tournament which means a meeting with Barcelona team-mate Roony Bardghji.
A hat-trick from Vikor Gyokeres gave Sweden a 3-1 win over Ukraine in a game in which Roony unfortunately didn’t make it off the bench.
