Should the Jets sign another backup QB following Tyrod Taylor injury news?

New York Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and will miss the remainder of the preseason, head coach Aaron Glenn recently confirmed. The Jets hope Taylor will be healthy enough for their Week 1 matchup versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the meantime, general manager Darren Mougey could consider signing another quarterback.

Mougey may not operate with a sense of urgency though. The Jets still have three healthy quarterbacks on their offseason 90-man roster. Starter Justin Fields is supported by Adrien Martinez and Brady Cook, who both played extensively versus the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 of the preseason.

Martinez will operate as the second-string QB in Taylor's absence. The former Nebraska and Kansas State signal-caller completed 11-of-16 passes for 152 yards and one touchdown. Cook, an undrafted free agent, was also efficient, completing 6-of-8 attempts for 62 yards and zero turnovers.

Taylor is a high-quality backup quarterback. The Jets will hope Taylor recovers for Week 1 of the regular season. Mougey must take his recovery into consideration when submitting his initial 53-man roster. Martinez and Cook can help get the Jets through the rest of the preseason, but ideally, neither player is Fields' backup versus the Steelers.
