South to retire jerseys of Cavs guard Craig Porter Jr., former Astro A.J. Reed
Terre Haute South High School will retire the No. 2 jersey of former Braves basketball standout Craig Porter Jr. — currently a Cleveland Cavaliers point guard — on Friday.
Then on April 24, the school will do the same for the No. 58 jersey of A.J. Reed, who became a major-league baseball player for the Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros.
South Athletic director Ed Jarvis announced the school's plans Monday afternoon.
Porter went on from South to play at Vincennes and Wichita State universities, before making the Cavs roster as a free agent.
"Craig has worked hard to make it to the top of the basketball world in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers," Jarvis said Monday, while also citing Reed's baseball accomplishments, including his success at the University of Kentucky.
"Since 1971, Terre Haute South has enjoyed athletic success in several sports," Jarvis said. "With our rich history, we would like to honor our past athletes who have made it to the top of our sport."
Previously, South had retired the jerseys of Braves alums Brian Evans (No. 50), who starred in basketball at Indiana University before a NBA career with the Magic, Nets and Timberwolves; Tony McGee, a football great who played in the Rose Bowl for Michigan, and then with the NFL's Bengals and Cowboys; in December for Tim Herrin Jr. (No. 9, who played at IU and now pitches for the Cleveland Guardians; and in September for Cam Cameron, a two-sport star at South who played football and basketball at IU and went on to coach collegiately and in the NFL.
Also, South has retired the numbers of its first football coach Bob Clements (No. 1); Class of 1999 wrestler Dale Griffin (No. 35), who "died in Afghanistan defending our country," Jarvis said; and basketball's Mike Joyner, a Class of 1977 star who played at the University of Evansville and died as a freshman with the Purple Aces in that team's plane crash later in '77.
South has more planned. "We have other athletes numbers we will retire and announce at a later date," Jarvis said.
