Statewide tourney opens locally: River Valley, Marysville open with losses; Yuba City begins with DH

The Y-S area struggled out of the gate during day one of the three-day 12-team NorCal Classic Spring Break Tournament hosted by Yuba City High’s varsity baseball program.

River Valley (2-16) opened with a 4-0 loss to D-I McClatchy, while Marysville (4-15-1) was run-ruled by D-I Folsom, 15-0 during pool play of the four-venue tournament.

Teams will be seeded in three separate brackets starting Tuesday, with the championship scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Field in Marysville.

The tournament host, Yuba City, opened its day late Monday with a doubleheader that finished past the Appeal deadline. The Honkers ended Monday with a cross-county battle against lower division Wheatland of the Pioneer Valley League. The complete field includes Sac-Joaquin’s No. 11 McClatchy; River Valley; Northern Section top-10 ranked Lassen; Yuba City, which sat No. 12 last week in the MaxPreps weekly computer rankings; Yreka; Wheatland; Marysville; Gridley; Vista del Lago; Folsom; NSCIF No. 8 University Prep (Redding) and LA City top-15 Narbonne.
