Tyreek Hill has idea to solve Dolphins' third down woes: 'Take De'Von Achane out'

The Miami Dolphins are searching for more success on offense after their once-prolific unit dropped from one of the league's most explosive groups in 2022 and 2023 to a mediocre one in 2024.

Among the Dolphins' many issues last year was the team's inability to consistently convert on third down. Miami's 36.3 percent success rate on third down ranked No. 25 in the NFL. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill has one idea that he thinks will yield more success moving the chains. He says the Dolphins have to get De'Von Achane off the field.

"Take De'Von [Achane] out on third down," Hill told reporters Friday. "That's my honest opinion. If it's third-and-short, he's not a power back. I've been telling him that in the locker room, but he swears he's a power back. I love De'Von, but if I'm being honest, that's why you got Jaylen Wright; that's why you got Ollie Gordon. For those kinds of situations."

It's not exactly a wild take. Achane is listed by the Dolphins at 191 pounds, while Wright is 208 and Gordon is 225.

But Achane still couldn't help but laugh at Hill's candid answer about the Dolphins backfield.

To be fair to Hill, he also acknowledged his personal failures on third down during the 2024 season in an interview on NFL Network.

"I think the most important thing is, being available for my quarterback on third downs," Hill told NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe and Brian Baldinger. "'23 was a great year, but if you look at most of my receptions they came on first down, second down. Not being able to be a quality receiver on third down and getting open on short routes, so I've been crafting my game all offseason working on fundamentals, working on different techniques so I can get open."

The Dolphins ranked No. 7 in the NFL on third down during the 2023 season.
