UNC gave Hubert Davis a chance to resign before his firing

The NCAA Tournament resumes on Thursday, but there's another pressing issue in college basketball: UNC is searching for a new head coach.

After days of speculation following a second-straight, First Round NCAA Tournament exit, North Carolina fired Hubert Davis on Tuesday. Davis previously stated he wanted to remain in charge, but leadership saw different.

According to TarHeel247's Andrew Jones, that statement was the final straw. The Tar Heels gave Davis a chance to resign, but he chose not to.

You can't blame a guy like Davis, who played for Dean Smith and later took over as Roy Williams' successor, for wanting to stay. UNC enjoyed some good times under Davis, including a run to the 2022 NCAA Championship game, but two consecutive first round exits aren't up to the Carolina Standard.

North Carolina beat Duke, Kansas and Kentucky in the regular season for the first time since 1981-82, with a second National Championship ending that season. The Tar Heels made a Sweet 16 run two seasons ago, but never passed the First Round since.

If UNC wants to become a National Championship contender again, it needs to hire a big-name coach from outside the Carolina Family. Going in-house for your coaching search is a much easier option, but North Carolina needs to make a home run hire.

Does Davis land another head-coaching gig this coming season? Will Davis stay in the area, with hopes of a future coaching gig opening up?

Regardless of what the Tar Heels' former head coach does, Davis' ability to recruit and win games should land him another head coaching gig.
