Urban Meyer recounts Terry McLaurin's time at Ohio State
Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin has been one of the most consistent wide receivers in the league for years now. However, the pass-catcher was far from a sure thing when he entered the NFL.
McLaurin played college ball at Ohio State and never put up elite numbers. In fact, McLaurin spent a lot of time on special teams in college. The receiver has spoken about how head coach Urban Meyer told him to work on his hands if he wanted to see more playing time.
On Friday, Meyer appeared on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., and reminisced about McLaurin's days in Columbus. Meyer explained that McLaurin came to one of his camps and immediately impressed by running a 4.4 40-yard dash. However, the legendary coach wasn't impressed with McLaurin's size or hands.
"He thought I was going to offer him, so I said, 'Here's what I want you to do. We have another camp in three weeks, I want you to catch 500 balls a day, I'll be able to tell if you're at least working on it. If you're working on it, I'll offer you a scholarship,'" Meyer explained.

Meyer then explained that McLaurin was not happy with this offer, and he didn't know if he'd ever hear from the receiver again. However, three weeks later, McLaurin returned to Columbus.
"He comes back, and he caught 500 balls, I could tell immediately," said Meyer. "And Terry McLaurin, he'd be successful at whatever he does."
McLaurin has certainly been successful in the NFL. Since being selected in the third round of the 2019 draft, McLaurin has made two Pro Bowls and has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in five different seasons.
McLaurin earned a large extension right before the 2025 season, so he should be catching passes for the Commanders for years to come.
