Virginia Tech softball: Another 5-0 weekend for the Hokies
The No. 11 Virginia Tech Hokies had been on the road for their first 18 games this season. That’s right, the Lady Hokies had yet to play in Blacksburg, but, despite that, they had managed to open the softball season with an impressive 16-2 record.
Over the weekend, Virginia Tech hosted the Hokie Invite. Only it wasn’t in Blacksburg, though, but right down the road in Salem. Entering this weekend, Tech had won nine consecutive games. On Sunday, the Hokies destroyed Bryant with an 11-1 run-rule victory to close out another 5-0 weekend and run their winning streak to 14 games.
The Hokies got the scoring started in the second inning with home runs from Emma Mazzarone and Jordan Bishop. It was Bishop’s first career home run. Jordan Lynch also homered in the game, her sixth of the season. Bishop , Gaby Mizelle, Lynch and Michelle Chatfield all drove in two runs for the Hokies. Avery Layton started the game, pitched two innings, followed by Addyson Fisher, who pitched two more frames, while Cassie Grizzard finished the game out. Fisher earned the win, her second of the season.
Here’s how the rest of the weekend went for VT:
- Thursday: Hokies 5, Michigan 3
- Friday: Hokies 7, James Madison 0
- Saturday: Hokies 7, Penn State 6
- Saturday: Hokies 8, Radford 2
- Sunday: Hokies 11, Bryant 1
Next up for Virginia Tech is a mid-week matchup with Elon. That game is also on the road. The Hokies begin ACC play on Friday at Duke with three games in Durham.
