🥎GAME OF THE DAY
Mary Rainey things going early for the Portsmouth softball team.
How she ended it was even better.
After coming back to tie the game and remaining there in the seventh, Rainey hit a one-out single that scored Emily Bronson with the game-winning run in No. 7 Portsmouth's 6-5 victory over No. 3 Toll Gate in the Division II losers’ bracket first-round game.
The game certainly didn’t start the way Portsmouth hoped for as its defensive woes continued and sparked Toll Gate’s three-run inning that saw Delaney Wilson and Abigail O’Connor drive in runs with RBI singles and Addison Eddy bring one in with a groundout.
In the third, the Patriots came up with a rally of their own. Barbara Rainey drove home the first run with a sacrifice fly and Mary Rainey hit a single that scored two runs to tie the game. Kaylyn Aubuchon followed with a sac fly to put Portsmouth ahead 4-3.
Toll Gate tied the game in the bottom of the third and the teams traded runs in the fifth and went to the seventh tied at five.
Bronson opened the inning with a bunt single, took second on a one-out walk to Mia Ruggieri and two pitches later, came firing home on Mary Rainey’s single. The Titans tried to rally in the seventh and had a runner in scoring position with two outs, but Ruggieri induced a ground ball to second to end the game.
Mary Rainey had a big day at the dish, going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Aubuchon finished with two RBI and Bronson scored twice.
O’Connor led the Toll Gate offense, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Liv Cota scored two in the loss that ends the Titans’ season.
Portsmouth moves on to the losers’ bracket quarterfinal and will travel to take on East Greenwich at a date and time to be determined.
⚾BASEBALL - Division I Pod 1
No. 5 North Kingstown 7, No. 9 Smithfield 2
Brandon Venditto had a strong performance on the mound and the Skippers’ offense started strong and gave him more than enough support in a 7-2 over the Sentinels in the losers’ bracket semifinal.
North Kingstown came out swinging early, with Venditto helping his cause with an RBI single that was followed by RBI singles by Chris Ciarniello and Tucker Lamond for a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In the third, Ben Davis tacked on two more with a two-out double for a 5-0 lead.
Venditto pitched confidently all afternoon, throwing 5 1/3 innings while giving up four hits, one earned run, walking two and striking out six. Smithfield put two on the board in the sixth inning, but NK’s offense got those right back in the bottom half.
Lamond and Davis both had two hits and two RBI in the win. Venditto had two hits and scored twice and Rock Arnold scored two runs.
In his final game for Smithfield, Giovanni Esposito led the way with a hit and one RBI. Fellow seniors Moe Villandry and Shaun Dwyer scored the runs in the loss.
North Kingstown moves on to the pod’s losers’ bracket final and will take on the loser of Friday’s game between No. 1 Hendricken and No. 4 La Salle.
⚾BASEBALL - Division I Pod 2
No. 6 East Providence 7, No. 10 Cranston West 2
A big second inning powered the Townies into the Pod 2 losers’ bracket finals.
East Providence plated five runs in the frame as Brian Rutkowski scored two runs on a single to the right side. The senior finished with a 2-for-3 day that included three RBIs. Aidan Martins also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
EP ace, Dylan Annicelli picked up the win with four innings pitched on 71 pitches. The senior allowed just one hit, one unearned run with six strikeouts to one walk.
The Townies face No. 2 Cumberland in the bracket finals on Friday at 4:15 in Cumberland.
No. 3 South Kingstown 4, No. 2 Cumberland 1
No. 3 South Kingstown is off to the Pod 2 Championship after a gritty road win against the Clippers.
After three consecutive singles loaded the bases in the fourth inning, Nicolas Vellone broke a 0-0 stalemate with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jordan Chaloux. Cumberland got out of the inning allowing just the one run, but SK added on in the fifth as Michael DiGioia scored Nolan Urian on an RBI single. A Cumberland error, later in the inning, led to another RBI single as Mark Hutchins handed the Rebels a 3-1 lead.
That was plenty of support for Quinn Matos, who tossed a complete game on 86 pitches with just four hits allowed and one earned run. The senior struck out two and didn’t allow a walk in the win.
South Kingstown awaits the winner of the Cumberland-East Providence game for the pod championship.
⚾BASEBALL - Division II Pod 1
No. 1 North Providence 4, No. 4 Chariho 2
Timely hitting booked North Providence’s ticket to the Pod 1 Championship.
After the Chargers reached base safely in their first four at-bats, North Providence answered nicely on its home turf. Back-to-back singles from Carter Harris and Ronald Paux cut the Cougars’ first-inning deficit to 2-1.
North Providence then knotted the game in the third inning on Tony Abed’s RBI-single that plated Paux from second base. And in the next frame, Michael Allard added a third RBI-single that scored Vincent Pontarelli for a 3-2 advantage.
The top-seeded Cougars added one more run in the sixth inning on another RBI-single from Allard. The multi-sport star finished the day going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Michael Ryan (6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 4 BB) had a stellar day on the mound and tossed 112 pitches in the win. North Providence awaits the winner of Chariho vs. Burrillville in the pod championship.
No. 5 Burrillville 2, No. 8 Narragansett 1
Burrillville staved off elimination on a walk-off base hit from Jack Dichiaro.
With two outs in the 11th inning, Jordan Furtado put the ball in play to the right side and reached safely on an error. Daniel DelMonaco, who reached first on a hit-by-pitch, advanced to third on the play and set up Dichiaro for the big RBI-knock.
Dichiaro’s winner was a single through the left side to send the Broncos into the Pod 1 losers’ bracket final. They will play Chariho, who the Broncos lost to in the first round, on Friday. Game time is TBD.
Burrillville got on the board first in the opening inning as Adrian Escalera scored Furtado on a single to center. Narragansett knotted the contest in the third inning and the teams remained scoreless until the winner.
Cameron Laramee pitched eight innings for the Broncos, allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with 10 strikeouts.
⚾BASEBALL - Division II Pod 2
No. 7 East Greenwich 2, No. 3 Central 0
The Avengers are no strangers to the playoffs. And it showed on Thursday night.
EG picked up a run in the first inning after Donovan Martin started the game with a leadoff triple. Tyler Gecawich plated him on the second pitch of the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to left.
That was all Miles Doman need for run support. The junior allowed just five hits and struck out four to two walks for a complete-game shutout.
East Greenwich now advances to the Pod 2 Championship. Game time is TBD. Central drops down to the losers’ bracket finals and faces West Warwick.
No. 6 West Warwick 4, No. 2 St. Raphael 2
West Warwick got a yeoman effort from starting pitcher Mason Hunt, who allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, as West Warwick doubled up on St. Raphael in the D-II, POD 2 loser's bracket semifinal. Hunt needed some help from his bullpen and it came in the person of Junior Anthony, who came in in the 7th inning with the winning run at the plate and two outs and proceeded to strike out the batter on three straight pitches.
⚾BASEBALL - Division III Pod 1
No. 1 Woonsocket 4, No. 5 PCD 2
Woonsocket continued its season-long dominance after a first inning stumble.
It was 2-2 after the first inning, but Braylon Guilbeault buckled down and turned in a complete-game win. The junior allowed just five hits, two earned runs and had seven strikeouts to one walk.
No. 1 Woonsocket answered PCD in the first inning on Jullian DeJesus’ two-out, two-RBI single to center. DeJesus, a sophomore, finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Noah Levreault also went 2-for-3 in the win.
Woonsocket heads to the Pod 1 championship and awaits the winner of PCD vs. Tiverton. The Villa Novans should have their ace, Patrick Munger, available for the pod championship. The pod championship is on Sunday, but first pitch is TBD.
No. 9 Tiverton 6, No. 4 Exeter-West Greenwich 1
Tiverton got off to a steady start and never looked back.
The ninth-seeded Tigers plated a run in each of the first four innings and another two in the sixth for a commanding road win. Kamdyn Rego had a standout day going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Rego hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and had a double to right field in the sixth.
The senior also picked up the win on the mound with six innings pitched. He allowed just five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts.
Tiverton faces No. 5 Providence Country Day in the Pod 1 losers’ bracket finals on Friday. First pitch is TBD.
⚾BASEBALL - Division III Pod 2
No. 11 North Smithfield 2, No. 7 BVPCF 1
After back-to-back walks loaded the bases in the seventh inning, North Smithfield took advantage.
The Northmen scored the winning run on a passed ball as Dennis Sullivan made the opportunistic charge home. On the second pitch of Wyatt Pullen’s at-bat, Sullivan played hero scoring from third after he originally walked with one out in the frame.
Tyler Albino and Dan Harrison combined for the stellar pitching performance. Albino tossed 112 pitches over 5 1/3 innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Harrison closed out the game without allowing a baserunner.
North Smithfield is off to the Pod 2 losers’ bracket finals where they will see No. 3 Scituate.
🥎SOFTBALL - Division I Playoffs
No. 3 Chariho 13, No. 2 Pilgrim 0
The Chargers’ bats made the Patriots pay for miscues as they scored 10 runs with two outs in the second on their way to a 13-0 win in the winners’ bracket semifinals.
Chariho opened the game with one run in the first inning and their second-inning rally looked stalled after the second out was record.
Instead, mayhem erupted. A botched play in the outfield on a ball hit by Adrianna Jeannenot outfield turned into three quick runs. Kaelyn Comerford singled and Brianna DeGiacomo hit a single to make it 5-0. After a Kesten Hanks single, Pilgrim booted another ball in the outfield that brought home three runs and three walks later, it was 10-0. Maddie Dorgan capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single.
Any comeback Pilgrim thought about wasn’t going to happen with the way Jeannenot was throwing. The sophomore All-Stater allowed only three hits and struck out three in her five-inning complete-game effort.
Five Chargers had two hits in the game and Hanks led the team with two RBI. DeGiacomo and Gabriella Ricci led Chariho with two runs apiece.
Chariho moves on to Saturday’s winners’ bracket final at Rhode Island College and will play top-seeded La Salle. Pilgrim drops to the losers’ bracket quarterfinal and will play the winner of Friday’s game between No. 7 Smithfield and No. 6 Coventry at a date and time to be determined.
🥎SOFTBALL - Division II Playoffs
No. 4 Barrington 11, No. 9 Scituate 1
Maya Etheridge’s fifth-inning home run broke up a tie game and ignited the Eagles’ offense as they walked off with an 11-1 win over the Spartans.
The first three innings belonged to the pitchers, as Scituate’s Isabella DeFusco had a shutout going and Barrington’s Kendall Fisher had surrendered one unearned run. Fisher got the run back with a solo home run in the fourth and the Eagles headed to the bottom of the fifth tied at 1.
Etheridge untied it in a hurry. Alyssa Conaty’s two-out single kept the inning going and after taking two balls, Etheridge planted the next pitch on the moon for a 3-1 lead. Ruby Ciummo followed with a singled and later scored on a passed ball.
Up 4-1, Barrington’s offense continued to tattoo the ball in the sixth. Ciummo hit a grand slam, Grace Fontaine hit a two-run homer and Cora Floriani brought the 10-run rule into effect when she scored on a passed ball, ending the game.
Ciummo had a beast of a day, going 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs. Fisher went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and threw all six innings, giving up two hits, no earned runs and striking out five.
The loss ends Scituate’s season. With the win, Barrington moves on to the losers’ bracket quarterfinal and will play the loser of Friday’s game between No. 1 St. Raphael and No. 5 Johnston.
No. 2 West Warwick 8, No. 6 East Greenwich 7
Charlotte Horak came up clutch in the fifth inning, breaking a tie ball-game and driving in what turned out to be the winning runs in the Wizards’ 8-7 victory over the Avengers.
It was a back-and-forth game early, as East Greenwich jumped out first after a West Warwick error and a big hit by Brooke Fairbanks. The Wizards quickly grabbed the lead back after a three-run home run by Adrianna Carsetti and Grace Gallo soon followed with an RBI triple.
The teams swapped runs and went to the fifth tied at six. In the bottom half, Kristina Sarlo got the West Warwick rally rolling and her single was followed by a double by Olivia Zajdek before Horak came up with a two-run hit for an 8-6 lead. East Greenwich scrapped up one run late, but couldn’t find another before it ran out of outs.
Fairbanks led the Avengers with two hits. East Greenwich falls to the losers’ bracket quarterfinal and will travel to play No. 4 Barrington at a date and time to be determined.
West Warwick advances to the Division II winners’ bracket final Saturday at Rhode Island College and will take on the winner of Friday’s game between No. 5 Johnston and No. 1 St. Raphael.
🥎SOFTBALL - Division III Playoffs
No. 8 Pawtucket 13, No. 5 Classical 3
The Raiders took advantage of Purple miscues and Taylor Kane did what was needed to be done in the circle in a 13-3 win.
Pawtucket trailed 1-0 after the first inning, but 12 runs in the second took care of that. Control problems and errors didn’t help Classical, but neither did big hits from Gianna Quinones and Laurel Christian.
With a 12-1 lead, Kane pitched smart the rest of the afternoon. She gave up two more runs, but it didn’t matter and Pawtucket brought the 10-run rule into play with one run in the top of the sixth. Kane threw all six innings, surrendered just one unearned run and struck out 13.
Quinones finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run. Christian went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Jeanelle Borges scored three times and Genesis Morales and Zanyiah Fortes both scored twice.

🥍BOYS LACROSSE - Division IV Quarterfinals
No. 3 Tiverton 11, No. 6 North Providence 10
Injuries and an ejection left the Tigers with eight players on the field, but their talent helped them build a lead and a big save by Christian D’Acchioli with 10 seconds left locked up a dramatic 11-10 win over the Cougars.
Tiverton started the season with 11 players on its roster and played down most of the night. The Tigers built a 6-4 lead at half and maintained it well until North Providence cut the deficit late to make it an 11-10 game.
The Cougars had one final possession and D’Acchioli made sure his already tired teammates didn’t have to play any more, coming up with the save that allowed them to kill clock and advance to the semifinals.
Seth Aguiar led Tiverton with four goals and June Cormier, Miles Cormier and Aiden Champ scored two goals apiece. Nick Gilkeson scored the other goal for the Tigers, who will take on No. 2 Rogers in the semifinals next week.
