What does Kliff Kingsbury think about these 2 young Commanders wide receivers?

Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is not worried about his wide receivers. No. 1 receiver Terry McLaurin has yet to practice this summer as he's currently at odds with the team over his contract. Noah Brown has dealt with an injury and missed significant time thus far in training camp.

That means we've seen plenty of Deebo Samuel. Kingsbury is accustomed to seeing Samuel from their shared time in the NFC West. Kingsbury couldn't hide his praise for Samuel.

“Incredibly competitive," Kingsbury said Monday. "Anything we ask him to do, whether we put him inside or outside, he's going to go at it a thousand miles per hour, has an ability to separate it. He's so strong. Running through can play at a high speed that guys have a hard time staying with him. Great addition for us."

Washington has lined Samuel up everywhere this summer. He's a standout at almost every practice and quickly earned the trust of quarterback Jayden Daniels.

While Kingsbury is excited about Samuel, he gave some insight on a pair of young receivers the Commanders need to step up in 2025.

First, Luke McCaffrey. Kingsbury said McCaffrey is "night and day" ahead of where he was as a rookie last summer.

"Luke has really come a long way from last year this time to now just the confidence, we're playing him outside a lot for necessity," Kingsbury said. "I think he can play inside as well, but he's made some plays. The young kids had his number on some plays, but it's been a good battle and he's definitely, night and day difference from what he was last year at this time.”

McCaffrey isn't the only young Commanders wideout. Jaylin Lane was a fourth-round pick from Virginia Tech. Kingsbury loved what he saw from Lane's college film despite VT's poor offensive structure.

“He's been very impressive," Kingsbury said. "He's a coach's kid, been around the game his entire life, and if you tell him how to do it one time, he usually nails it, and then if he makes a mistake, he'll come back and get it corrected, but super, super talented, very fast. I've been really impressed. I don't think I could see some of those things at Virginia Tech, watching the film and getting him here in person and watching him run around and watching the coachability and the route tree that he can run."

Kingsbury clearly likes what he sees from Washington's young receivers. Both McCaffrey and Lane can play outside or in the slot. Lane can be used as a deep threat, something he didn't have the chance to do a lot at Virginia Tech.

Make no mistake, Kingsbury wants and needs McLaurin back. But he's not as concerned about Washington's wide receivers as those on the outside.
