Will star RB Bucky Irving's offseason surgery impact the Buccaneers?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers saw starting running back Bucky Irving miss significant time this past season as he dealt with injury struggles, and now the second-year NFL star has gone under the knife to deal with one of those issues.

Irving missed seven games during the 2026 season due to ankle and shoulder injuries. However, he returned to action in Week 13, making six consecutive appearances with five starts to end the year. But recently, the news broke that Irving had undergone shoulder surgery after the season ended.

Irving has played a significant role in the Buccaneers' offense during both of his seasons in the league. As a rookie in 2024, he made 17 appearances and three starts, finishing the season with 1,122 rushing yards, 392 receiving yards, and eight rushing touchdowns. This past season, Irving made ten appearances and started nine of those, tallying 588 rushing yards, 277 receiving yards, and four total touchdowns.

But for fans of the franchise worried about how this should affect Tampa Bay in 2026, there isn't a ton of need to fret. Reports indicate the injury is not expected to impact Irving's participation in the team's offseason program or his ability to play next season. Which is a good thing for the Bucs, as they're likely set to part ways with Rachaad White in free agency, leaving many believing Irving will be pegged as the full-time starter next season.
